Stacey Abrams Set To Visit AZ Battleground

Consciousness Calendar: Arizona is in play for both parties in 2020, but there are also events to shine a light on other pressing issues and causes like prison reform

With the Grand Canyon State being in play this election year, both the Democratic and Republican parties are spending plenty of money and time trying to win votes. Along with campaign stops by presidential and Congressional hopefuls, there are lots of ways Arizonans can make their voices heard.
 
If you don’t like the current U.S. president, he will be in Phoenix on Wednesday to hear your issues with him if you attend the Trump Campaign Rally Protests at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
 
A rising star in American politics is coming to Arizona: Voting Rights With Stacey Abrams will take place starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Carpenters Local Union 1912, 4547 W. McDowell Road in Phoenix. Abrams, a Democrat, nearly won the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial race, and is considered a future presidential or vice presidential candidate.

The Arizona Faith Network is sponsoring Unlocking Justice at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, at Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, 111 E. Taylor St. in Phoenix. This forum will focus on incarceration and help attendees understand how they can help solve the crisis surrounding it. Tickets are $10.

Wednesday, Feb. 19
Community organization LUCHA is hosting LUCHA Lobby Day at the AZ State Capitol from 7: 30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Members will meet with all state legislators and present the 2020 LUCHA Platform.

If you don’t like the current U.S. president, he will be in Phoenix on Wednesday to hear your issues with him if you attend the Trump Campaign Rally Protests at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum 1826 W. McDowell Rd., Phoenix. Trumpers will likely be in the parking lot all day, but most protestors are expected to arrive after 6 p.m.

Thursday, Feb. 20
Mom's Demand Advocacy AZ is hosting a statewide Advocacy Day 2020 at the state capitol. The group is advocating for legislation to disarm domestic abusers and meet with our representatives to talk about why gun violence prevention is a legislative and electoral priority.

The Beus Center for Law and Society at the Sandra Day O’Connor Law School At Arizona State University is hosting a three day conference, The Controlled Substance Act at 50 Years.

LULAC Meet And Greet is happening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Crescent Crown Distributing, 1640 W. Broadway Road in Mesa. This event is hosted by the League of United Latin American Citizens and NOVLE.

Friday, Feb. 21
Arizona Jews for Justice is hosting Protect our Democracy at 10:30 a.m. at Temple Chai, 4545 E. Marilyn Road in Phoenix. Topics include voting rights and how to ensure that everyone has the chance to vote. 

Saturday, Feb. 22
AIDS Walk Arizona 2020, the largest gathering in Arizona to advance the cause of HIV and AIDS funding and awareness, is the flagship event of the central Arizona HIV/AIDS community, catalyzing awareness, education, and support. All proceeds are returned to Aunt Rita's member agencies to support the vital services they provide.

Sunday, Feb. 23
She was appointed to fill the late John McCain’s seat (after losing to Democrat Kyrsten Sinema in 2018), and U.S. Sen. Martha McSally is running for re-election again. This should be an easy election, but her poll numbers state otherwise. Another issue: McSally has yet to host a town hall. Missing Martha McSally, hosted by HRC Arizona, will happen at 2 p.m. at Educare Arizona, 1300 N. 48th St. in Phoenix. Congressman Ruben Gallego (D-Arizona), will speak. Admission is free.

The Arizona Faith Network is sponsoring Unlocking Justice at 2 p.m. at Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law,  111 E. Taylor St. in Phoenix. 

Monday, Feb. 24
Secular Day at the Capitol 2020, sponsored by the Secular Coalition of Arizona, will begin at 9 a.m. at the State Capitol Lawn in Phoenix. Attendants can learn about current threats to secular government and advocacy training, and meet their lawmakers. David Tamayo, founder and president of Hispanic Freethinkers, will speak. Lunch and a T-shirt are included; a donation is suggested. 

Howard Center Student Investigations will take place at 7 p.m. in the First Amendment Forum, Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at 555 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix. Howard Center students uncover, deeply research and publish stories of significant importance.

Stand With Asarco Strikers, sponsored by the Arizona AFL-CIO, will begin at 11 a.m. at 100 N. 3rd St. in Phoenix. Workers and supporters will stand outside of the Society for Mining, Metalurgy and Exploration National Conference taking place at the Phoenix Convention Center. Free transportation will be provided.






Tuesday, Feb. 25
Concerned citizens may attend the Phoenix City Council Vote on Civilian Oversight of the Police, starting at 2:30 p.m. at in council chambers. Poder in Action and several other groups are demanding the council votes on a civilian oversight model that contains four components, including independence. 

Wednesday, Feb. 26
Social Design and Sustainability will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. in Wrigley Hall, Room 481 on the Arizona State University campus in Tempe.  Cheryl Heller, an ASU innovation design professor, will provide an overview of social design, how it works and how it can support solutions to complex challenges.

Reconciliation in the Balkans will begin at noon in Cronkite 444, Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, located at 555 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix. Humphrey Fellows Nera Valentic, a broadcast journalist in Croatia, and Radovan Bogojevic, a journalist in Montenegro, look at how 30 years after the civil war in former Yugoslavia, a region “can leave the past behind and look to the future.”

Thursday, Feb. 27
Rally for HR8 will take place starting at 5 p.m. at the state Capitol. HR8, the Universal Background Checks Act, passed the U.S. House one year ago and hasn’t been moved in the Senate. March For Our Lives Arizona is the sponsor. 

Friday, Feb. 28 to March 1
Local to Global: 2020 Forum and Festival is an annual event that seeks to connect local diversity, sustainability, social justice and human rights issues to larger global struggles. This free event on the ASU campus will feature workshops, free speakers and entertainment.
