The Local Convention Aims To Terrify, Dazzle, And Bemuse The Phoenix Metro With Events To Include A Zombie Beauty Contest, Cosplay, And Kid’s Day

Jan. 4, 2014 — The Amazing Arizona Comic Con, Jan. 24 to 26, is coming to the Phoenix Convention Center later this month, featuring an expanded room to highlight many favorite local creators in the art alley of more than 200 tables.

Special guests include Robert Kirkman, creator and writer of the Eisner Award-winning The Walking Dead, the long-running Invincible, all-ages Super Dinosaur and Thief of Thieves. He is also the creator, executive producer and writer of AMC’s The Walking Dead. The star will meet fans and sign autographs at the Amazing Arizona Comic Con on Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th.

Critically acclaimed Danai Gurira, known for her role as Michonne in Kirkman’s TV show, will also meet fans, sign autographs, and take photos on the Jan. 25 and 26. Autograph tickets can be purchased at the event’s website,, where admission may also be upgraded to the limited The Walking Dead. premium package.

The convention’s guest of honor will be Geoff Johns, DC Comics chief creative officer and Forever Evil writer.

Hint: Cosplay and costuming plays an important role at the Amazing Arizona Comic Con and in the Phoenix Fan Community at large; any questions about costuming rules or events may be directed to (Also pay attention to and for event updates.)

All costume weapons and props must conform to state and federal law. No actual weapons are allowed, and they must be easily distinguishable from real weapons. Prop firearms must have an orange cap on the barrel, projectiles are forbidden, metal weapons are not permitted. More details are available on the convention website.

The organizers ask that all cosplayers remember that the convention is a family-friendly event, particularly on Sunday, which is Kid’s Day.

Zombie Beauty Pageant
The Amazing Arizona Comic Con’s Zombie Beauty Pageant is on Friday the Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m.; pre-registration and check-in begins 90 minutes before the pageant. The top three contestants will receive prizes, and one of them will be crowned the Zombie Beauty of Amazing Arizona Comic Con.

Contestants must be 16 years of age or older, must pre-register in person on the day of the pageant, contestants may be male, female, other, or non-specified, no liquids may be dripping, or otherwise getting loose on stage, no pyrotechnics, explosives or squibs are allowed, no group entries or nudity is allowed, items cannot be thrown into the audience and no lewd acts or foul language are allowed.

Kid’s Day
Sunday is Kid’s Day, featuring special programming for children and the whole family, including free sketches, cartoons, video games, and costume contests.

Disney’s Phineas & Ferb Free Sketches are available for kids 10 and under, and writer/artist of the hit TV show and movie franchise, Mat Nastos will draw your child’s Phineas & Ferb character of choice. And fans of all ages may enjoy the Adventure Time meet-up to watch the cartoon series starring Finn & Jake.

During the My Little Pony Hour of Power from 1 to 2 p.m., artist Tony Fleecs will sketch your favorite Pony. There will be a kids costume parade, and each child who participates will receive a special prize.

Housekeeping and Details
Also, the convention is looking for cheerful volunteers who are able to listen and follow directions, with the ability to routinely lift 50-pound boxes, carry equipment, and much more. In exchange for working one of several five hour shifts, the convention will grant the volunteer one day of admission.
