March 23, 2012 — Festival of Flesh is coming back to Joe’s Grotto, 13825 N. 32nd St., Phoenix, Saturday and the ever-growing semi-annual event is looking fleshier (better) than ever.
“It’s sort of like a mini fetish-ball,” said Dani Danger, suspension artist, who’s performed at every Festival of Flesh.
This year is no different for Danger.
“I am singing with the band vex and probably doing a stage show for them — I usually do,” she said.
Heavy metal band Element A440 will be blasting their brand of heavy metal while vendors of all sorts peddle their exotic and kinky wares.
Tucson-based Modigs Custom Furniture will be on site selling their exclusive hardwood, one of kind, sex furniture. For people into spanking, Firebird Floggers will be at Joe’s Grotto for the event with their unique line of colorful whipping devices.
Chainmail artists Wasteland Designs will also be in Glendale putting their stamp on the Festival of Flesh, and Bind the Soul will be there with bondage rope.
Suspension artists Life Suspended will also be performing at the Grotto on March 24, and they don’t rest on their laurels constantly pushing the envelope of flesh hook suspension shows.
Arizona’s premier burlesque troupe Scandelesque will be mixing black leather and gorgeous women to captivate the audience. Fiery bustiers and feathers of seduction are just a small part of their scandalous stage show.
To go along with the heavy metal bands, and the alternative stage shows Joe’s grotto is also putting on a variety of kinky demos. There will be rope play, flogging, whips, blood play and who knows what else.
Festival of Flesh is about more than just body modification and kink though. For many attendees, it is a place to find a community of like-minded individuals.
“It makes me feel really good about my community,” said Danger. “Half the reason people go is to just meet up with friends and be around like-minded people.”
Danger has performed at each of the Festivals of Flesh since it first got going in 2010. She said the growth of the festival is validation that there is a thriving kink community in the Valley.
“It’s grown quite a bit the first couple were a whole lot smaller and now Joe’s Grotto is packed, I’ve been to ones that are completely shoulder to shoulder inside,” Danger said.
The ways parents watch their children grow taller, festival participants watch each other’s body modifications grow and become more extravagant.
“You start seeing the same faces over and over again and you see people evolve, they get more tattoos and more work done,” said Danger.
A consummate showman, Danger had one of her worst performance-based disasters at Festival of Flesh, but pressed on to entertain her fans.
“My knees tore out when I got pulled up on stage when I was performing with Life Suspended,” she said. “They tore out within like the first 30 seconds and I didn’t want my fans to have to come there to see me and only get a 30-second performance.”
So Danger rallied her suspension team and made them take hooks out of her knees, and put them in her back. Danger went back up on the flesh hooks and performed a half hour show while bleeding from her knees.
After the show Danger got down and went into the crowd to take pictures and talk to the crowd as the festival managers tried to rush her and her bleeding knees out the door and to the hospital.
“So we needed to get stitches but we are not going to an ER cause fuck explaining that to a paramedic,” said Danger, so they went back to a piercing studio, where there were six sutures.
“So they were getting ready to sew me up and he looked down and said ‘that hole looks like a vagina in fact that hole is probably big enough to fuck,” she said. “There is no way I am going to have a hole in my body big enough to fuck and not have a pretty girl inside of it.”
“So I looked at my friend Erica who was there and I said, ‘Erica put on gloves’ and she said ‘ok’ so she put on gloves, and two fingers deep literally fucking my knee vagina while both of us made ‘o’ faces” said Danger.
