Unlimited Arts Calendar: National tours set to rock, shake, act and visualize throughout the Phoenix metro this week as locals continue to deliver great works to the community

What do you get when you take Mystery Science Theater 3000, The Big Lebowski, Verdi’s Requiem and Spongebob Squarepants and mix them all together?

That’s easy ... it’s this week’s Unlimited Arts Calendar.

But that’s not all. There’s much more, including Alan Parsons, Patton Oswalt and La Cage Aux Folles. Or, if interpretive dance is more your style, there is an event that uses the art form to promote renewable energy.

Something for everyone, surely.

THIS WEEK
Friday, Jan. 24
She started off as a ‘90s alt darling, but singer and guitarist Juliana Hatfield has endured.  She’ll perform at 7 p.m. at The Crescent Ballroom, 12 W. Camelback Road in Phoenix. Her most recent album is Weird, and she’ll perform fan favorites. Potty Mouth is the opening act. 

An indie rock dance party featuring Electric Feels will kick off at 9:30 p.m. at the Rialto Theatre, 318 E. Congress in Tucson. Those over 18 may get down and boogie. 

Respect The Underground, an eighth anniversary concert, will happen at 7 p.m. at The Pressroom, 441 W. Madison St. in Phoenix.

Jan. 24 to 26
Troupe Vertigo and the Phoenix Symphony will perform Cirque Cinderella at 7:30 p.m. at the Orpheum Theatre, 203 W. Adams St. in Phoenix. The production features an energetic score with aerialists, contortionists, hula hoops, strong men and jugglers. Tickets start at $37.

Jan. 24 to Feb. 2
The Tony-winning theater hit Spring Awakening is coming to Phoenix, running through Feb. 2 at the Stagebrush Threatre, 7020 E. 2nd St. This show deals with sexuality, trauma, grief and is not for young children, so parental discretion is advised. Tickets are $20.

Jan. 24 to Feb. 28
The classic Tony-winning musical La Cage aux Folles, created by the legendary Broadway composer Jerry Herman, will run through March 22 at the Arizona Broadway Theatre, 7701 W. Paradise Lane in Peoria. All tickets can be purchased through the ABT Box Office by calling 623-776-8400 or online.

Saturday, Jan. 25
Award-winning comedian, actor and writer Patton Oswalt will take the stage at 8 p.m. at the Celebrity Theatre, 440 N. 32nd St. in Phoenix. Admission starts at $45.

The multimedia production Dancing Earth: Between Underground and Skyworld will be presented at ASU Gammage. The work “illuminates the practical, spiritual and cultural aspects of renewable energy.” Admission is $20.

New York singer/instrumentalist Theo Katzman will play the Crescent Ballroom, 308 N. 2nd Ave. in Phoenix. His latest album is Modern Johnny Sings. The show will start at 8 p.m., and admission is $20. 

Jan. 26 to March 1
Elephant & Piggie’s “We are in a Play!” presented by Childsplay Theatre, focuses on two critters who sometimes they face tough questions. What do you wear to a fancy party? Should you share your ice cream? This musical is being staged at the Herberger Theater Center, and is open to kids 3 and older. Admission ranges from $12 to $35; showtimes vary. 

Jan. 28 to Feb. 2
It’s all about “Tradition!” Fiddler on the Roof, the iconic Broadway musical, is playing at the Arizona State University Gammage. Showtimes vary, and tickets start at $92. 

Wednesday, Jan. 29
They’ve been mocking cheesy horror and science fiction films since the late 1980s, and  Mystery Science Theater 3000 will be live at The Mesa Arts Center, One E. Main St. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m., and tickets start at $37.50. 

Dudes will abide: A Musical Tribute to The Big Lebowski will be held at 8 p.m. at he Crescent Ballroom, 308 N. 2nd Ave. in Phoenix. Featuring live perfomances and lots of classic rock, the event will benefit music education in Phoenix. Tickets are $7; the show is open to those 21 and older. 

Jan. 29 to Feb. 23
The musica true storyl Americano focuses on Tony, the child of immigrants who discovers his undocumented status when he tries to enlist in the Marines. (It’s based on the life of Antonio Valdovinos.) Click the link for showtimes and ticket prices. 

Friday, Jan. 31
Alan Parsons Live Project, featuring the veteran, chart-topping English rockers, will happen at 8 p.m. at the Celebrity Theatre, 440 N. 32nd St. in Phoenix. Admission starts at $35. 

The Phoenix Symphony will perform Verdi’s Requiem today and Feb. 1 at Symphony Hall, 75 N. 2nd St. Both shows are at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $43.

Flight: An Immersive Theatre Installation, by Vox Monus, will be held at the Tempe Center for the Arts, 700 W. Rio Salado Pkwy. The production mixes a graphic novel with an “exquisite diorama,” and focuses on two orphaned brothers embarking on a desperate odyssey for freedom. There will be four shows, starting at 6 p.m. Admission starts at $10. 

Jan. 31 to Feb. 2
The Tony award-winning The Spongebob Musical, based on the lovable sea critter and all his friends, is running through Feb. 2 at the Orpheum Theatre in Phoenix. Showtimes vary; tickets start at $45.25.

Jan. 31 to Feb. 16

Saturday, Feb. 1
Nashville-based singer Ron Pope, who has a new album coming out this year, will play the Crescent Ballroom, 12 W. Camelback Road. Fellow Nashville singer Caroline Spence is the opening act, and the show starts at 8 p.m. Admission ranges from $25 to $75.
