Feb. 12, 2016 - Greetings, movie lovers! Did you miss the major news and headlines from this week in film? Don’t you worry, because we’ve got you covered with the newest edition of the Movie News Mixtape. This week, the Super Bowl delivered trailers from tons of big movies, some interesting films got greenlit and Deadpool is finally opening. Let’s dig in, shall we?

Super Bowl: Trailers for Jason Bourne, Captain America, The Jungle Book and More Debuted During The Super Bowl
This year’s Super Bowl turned out to be pretty great for a few groups of people. One, The Denver Broncos on the count of them winning. Two, anyone who works at CBS as it was the third most watched television event of all time. However, it was movie fans who really won out, because there was a boat load of movie trailers that aired during the game.

Disney appeared to win the day as the Captain America: Civil War spot got the most views and was talked about the most on social media. The Jungle Book also got a new spot and the reception for that was quite positive as well. Outside of Disney’s offerings, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fans got their first look at Krang in the spot for Out of the Shadows and to everyone’s surprise, we got our first look at the upcoming Bourne movie which we now know will simply be titled, Jason Bourne.

Rounding it all out was a very revealing spot for 10 Cloverfield Lane, a destruction heavy look at Independance Day: Resurgence and  a very promising look at X-Men: Apocalypse. In case you missed any of the Super Bowl trailers, a YouTuber decided to edit them all together in one big, juicy video.

Most of the movie trailer news took place during the Super Bowl, but Blumhouse Productions decided to drop the trailer for The Purge 3: Election Year during the week and it seemed to get people pretty excited. The film appears to be a blend of the first two installments all centered around trying to protect a presidential candidate who wants to see the annual purge done away with. Look for it July 1.

Things We Learned: Fast and Furious Wants A Female Villain, Ready Player One Moves And More
Fast 8 - It looks like Charlize Theron is going to be heading up another huge car movie with a bunch of explosions in it, as it was revealed that the studio wants a female villain for the next installment and they are eyeing Theron for the role. No word on if she has signed on yet officially or not.

Deadpool - The Merc With a Mouth finally has his big screen adaptation hitting theaters this weekend and all signs point to it being a huge success. The film is set to destroy the competition at the box office this weekend and the reviews from both fans and critics have been wildly positive. So much so, in fact, that Fox has already greenlit a sequel. The studio announced that they will be bringing back the entire creative team behind Deadpool for the sequel. No word yet on a release date.

Ready Player One - Star Wars has made it clear that they are locking down the month of December for the foreseeable future, so any other major studio tentpole films are sort of being forced to get out of the way. To that point, Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the sci-fi book Ready Player One has moved from December 2017 into 2018.

Sonic On The Big Screen - As odd as it may sound, it was announced earlier this week that Sonic The Hedgehog will be getting a full length feature film. The movie is set to be a combination of live action and animation. The film is set to hit theaters some time in 2018.

Battlestar Galactica - After nearly two decades of whispers, the big screen adaptation of Battlestar Galactica looks like it is finally going to happen. Universal has signed on Dylan Clark (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Michael De Luca (The Social Network) and Scott Stuber (Ted) to helm a big-screen version. No word yet on a release date.

Alien: Covenant - Lastly, in some of the more bizarre casting news you are likely to hear for quite some time, funny man Danny McBride has been cast in Ridley Scott’s upcoming Prometheus sequel, currently titled Alien: Covenant.

Box Office Review/Preview And Predictions
Last weekend was fairly uneventful at the box office as Kung Fu Panda 3 once again took the top spot and the weeks new offerings, Hail Caesar! and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies both tanked. This week should be much more exciting, even if it will be predictable, as Deadpool is set to demolish the competition. Zoolander 2 and How To Be SIngle are also opening this week, but the critical buzz has been pretty bad for the long awaited comedy sequel. The good news is that if you aren’t interested in seeing Deadpool, you shouldn’t have a problem getting a seat in another movie.

Weekend Box Office Predictions

  • Deadpool
  • Zoolander 2
  • Kung Fu Panda 3
  • How To Be SIngle
  • The Revenant
