Want to try out the once in a lifetime, first-ever Marvel Experience? Or how about show off  your writing skills to a few thousand readers?

Well, for the next three weeks, we’ve got you covered as Modern Times Magazine is now accepting submissions of original fiction that will earn the winner two tickets to the World Preview of the Marvel Experience.

Entries are not to exceed 500 words, and feature a writer’s favorite Marvel superhero — or a new superhero you have created — saving the day in the Phoenix Metro. The winner will earn two tickets to The Marvel Experience.

Submissions will be whittled down to no more than five finalists by Modern Times Magazine’s editorial board and posted on for viewing. Each finalist’s story will then be judged by a panel consisting of Joshua Wyrick, editor-in-chief of Compete Magazine, Jake Friedman, founder and editor-in-chief of Four Chambers Press, and Drew Sullivan, owner of Ash Avenue Comics.

Each of the finalists will be allotted points (with a total of 30 points possible) based upon three criteria:
  • Social media — Total number of Twitter retweets and Facebook likes.
  • Web reach — Total number of pageviews for each finalist’s story on
  • Judges — Each judge will rank the finalists.

The finalist with the highest number of social shares will be awarded 10 points, the next highest will receive 9 and so on. The same allotment will be conducted based upon pageviews. Each judge will also independently rank the finalists, allotting 10 points for their winner, 9 for their runner up and so on. The judges’ scores will then be averaged to determine the judges’ overall winner and runner-ups.

The three scores — social media, web reach, judges — will then be added for each finalist to determine who has the most total points and is therefore the winner of the two tickets for any day at The Marvel Experience. Any story longer than 500 words will be automatically disqualified. Stories can be submitted to until midnight on Dec. 5 and a winner will be announced Dec. 12. All submissions must include the legal name, phone number (if possible), and residential address of the writer. Tickets will provide admission for two people to The Marvel Experience at Salt River Fields From Dec. 13 to Jan. 1 during normal operating hours.
