Aug. 7, 2019 — As the nation was still reeling from recent  violence in Gilroy, Calif., and two other American cities, two mass shootings occurred within 24 hours of each this past weekend. The first was in El Paso, Texas, where the alleged gunman killed 22 people and wounded over 20 on Aug. 3 while they were shopping.

That was followed by a shooting that took place in the early hours of Aug. 4 in Dayton, Ohio, where the alleged shooter killed nine people and injured 32 who were celebrating at a popular night club.

In the aftermath, Americans looked for leadership and comfort from the current president, but Donald Trump — sadly, as usual — failed.

He blamed mental illness, video games and other factors, but (in the case of the El Paso incident) not the growing white supremicist movement.  Although Trump condemned hatred, it seemed like a curious self-own in light of his own odious record of inflammatory comments.

In today’s podcast, Modern Times Publisher John Guzzon and Karen Weil, editor at large, discuss these tragedies and where we go from here, in terms of how Congress may react.
