March 12, 2018 — Practicing profundity is not easy, nor easily accessible.

One has to think, be critical and not afraid of what they might find, as sometimes intellectual exploration reveals findings counter to what a mind had originally conceived.

But it is worth it, and we are here to help.

This incarnation of the Political Profundity podcast brings us five important thoughts on the current political state as discussed by regular hosts John Guzzon and Karen Weil.

Trade War looming?
With President Trump signing a proclamation Thursday, along with his constant threats over NAFTA and putting tariffs on certain products, talk of a global trade war is growing. Karen and John pointed out that while agreements can harm workers, protectionist efforts will most likely be disastrous.

Sessions’ Immigration speech
Attorney General Jeff Session made a scathing speech regarding California’s pushback on the Trump administration’s efforts to remove undocumented workers from the United States. Karen and John discussed whether Sessions’ speech was mainly to appease Trump, and state Gov. Jerry Brown’s harsh response.

Political Profundity: Of Tariffs, Investigations and Trump
Will Hawley-Smoot's ghost serve to further haunt U.S policy, plus can there ever be a piece of peace when guns are concerned? More: Stormy Daniels; and Sessions tacks from drugs to immigration. — March 12, 2018

Blue Texas?
Tuesday’s primary in Texas showed much greater Democratic turnout – although Republican voters still dominated. U.S. Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke is mounting a strong campaign against Republican Ted Cruz, but faces long odds. John and Karen discussed how turnout and anti-Trump sentiment may change dynamics in the Lone Star State.

Parkland Aftermath
The Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Fla. Has been a catalyst for gun law reform. The state Legislature has passed some restrictions, including a controversial measure on arming teachers. John and Karen said this movement, lead by social media-savvy Generation Z students, has put pressure on both the federal and state government – but they are long way from effecting deeper change. However, this could affect 2018 elections.

Stormy Weather
Stormy Daniels, pornographic actress is suing Donald Trump. Daniels claims that is 2006 she had an affair with Trump that lasted over a year. The whole seedy affair is an example of how Trump’s massive record of bad behavior, combined with his dishonesty over it, further solidifies the general public’s distrust of him. John and Karen also pointed out the grand hypocrisy of Evangelicals for supporting Trump.
